The Phrase Shaper™
Turn the fills you know into fresh ideas you can use live.
A six-week coaching round for band and church drummers who can already play — and are tired of reaching for the same handful of fills when the song opens up.
Sound familiar?
You've been at this for years. Your time is solid, you hold a groove, you've got fills in your hands. But the moment the song opens up — the moment it's your turn to say something — you reach for the same one you always play. The safe one. Again. And you walk off knowing that wasn't really you.
It's not that you can't play. What comes out live is just a fraction of what you actually know. It sounds fine at home, then disappears the second it counts — and another folder of licks off YouTube has never fixed it. Because the problem was never how many fills you have.
You don't need another folder of fills. You need a way to make decisions while the song is moving.
What this is
Six weeks of real coaching — not a course you watch and forget.
The Phrase Shaper is a small, guided round where I take you through the first and most important part of my method: turning ideas you already have into phrases you can shape, trust, and actually use in a song. You get live calls with feedback on your own playing, video lessons to work through at your pace, practice material, and a plan built around where you are — not a generic curriculum.
It's the entry point to the wider Fill Freedom path. For most drummers, it's the step that finally makes everything else click.
The shift
Where this moves you.
How the six weeks work
Three movements, built in order.
Shape the phrase
Shape phrases from ideas you already have, develop the flow between them, and expand one small idea into many. This is the heart of it.
Make it solid
Train the coordination underneath, release the tension that trips you up, and lock the timing so what you play actually holds together.
Use it live
Apply your phrases in real songs, practise them under a little pressure, and build the trust to simply play the idea when the moment comes — instead of freezing.
The dates
Six live sessions, with two weeks off to catch up.
Every session is on a Wednesday, 19:00–20:30 Amsterdam time, and every one is recorded — so a busy week never means falling behind. Extra Q&A calls get added once the group is together and I know what you need.
What's included
Live coaching calls
Real feedback on your actual playing — what's working, what to fix, what to do next. Recorded if you can't make it live.
Pre-recorded video lessons
The system laid out step by step, so you can watch, rewind, and practise on your own schedule.
Practice PDFs & notation
Clear written material for every movement, so you always know exactly what to work on.
A personalised practice program
Built around where you are right now — not a one-size-fits-all plan you follow blindly.
By the end
You'll be playing differently.
Six weeks in, you'll be shaping fresh phrases and using them in real songs — instead of reaching for the same fill on autopilot. Not more patterns memorised, but the beginning of a way of playing that finally feels like yours. That's the whole point of starting here.
Is this you?
This is for you if…
- You've been playing for years and your time and groove are solid
- You play in a band or on a worship team
- You know your fills — you just keep defaulting to the same few
- You freeze or overthink the moment the song gives you space
- You're done collecting licks and want to make musical choices instead
Please skip this round if…
- You're still building basic time and control
- You want a pile of new fills to memorise, not a way to create them
- You're after a quick tip rather than six weeks of real work
- You can't commit to practising at least three times a week
Before you commit
This only works if you show up to the pad.
I'd honestly rather you keep your money than join and not practise. There's no way around the reps — shaping phrases into something you can trust live takes hands-on time, not just watching.
So here's the honest bar: at least three times a week, 30–45 minutes a session. If you can put that in for six weeks, you'll be amazed how far you get. If you can't right now, please wait for a round when you can.
Minimum · 3× a week · 30–45 minWho's coaching you
I spent 15 years building the steps nobody explained to me.
Years ago I sat in a clinic with one of the best drummers alive and asked him what to practise. He showed me something incredible in about four seconds — and couldn't explain a single step in between. That gap, between what the greats do and what the rest of us can actually follow, became my whole thing.
I've since played for crowds of 75,000, and I've frozen on stage too — enough to learn that copying fills makes you nervous, while letting them come up naturally always works. The Phrase Shaper is how I get you to that second place on purpose, without the years of guessing.
The deal
You'll know within two weeks.
Come to the first calls, do the practice, and see how it feels in your own hands. If it's not right for you, email me within 14 days and I'll refund you in full — no awkwardness. You show up and do the work; I make sure it's worth it.
