Justin Scott's first masterclass in Europe, hosted by Eddie van Dongen in Den Haag, The Netherlands, on Wednesday 21 October

You've watched Justin Scott play a hundred times. Now learn how he practises.

Justin has never taught in Europe before, and his first time will be in The Netherlands, at Drumschool Stefan van de Brug in Den Haag, with 12 drummers each sitting behind a practice pad and a kick pad, working through the Core Rudiment System with the man who wrote it.

You can't copy flow

Be honest. You've saved his videos, slowed them down, and maybe even tried to learn one of his runs note for note. And even when you got the notes right, it still didn't sound like Justin.

That's because his flow isn't in the licks. It comes from the way he practises, day after day, for years, with a small set of rudiments that he turns into hundreds of variations. The licks you see on Instagram are simply what comes out at the end.

A video can show you the result, but it can't show you that process. Sitting in a room with Justin while he shows you exactly how he works, and watches your hands while you play, can.

This isn't a clinic where you sit and watch. Every seat comes with a pad, a kick pad and Justin's full attention.

What you walk out with when the day is done

You won't go home with a notebook full of licks you'll never play. You'll go home with the way Justin practises, already in your hands.

A way of practising you can repeat

You'll know how Justin works through the core rudiments, how he builds permutations and variations from them, and what to sit down with tomorrow morning instead of guessing.

Hands and feet that have already done it

You'll have played the material on your pad and kick pad with Justin correcting you in the room, so you know it feels right, not just that it looks right on paper.

An understanding of where flow comes from

You'll see how rudiment practice turns into ideas that move freely around the kit, instead of separate licks you have to remember and force into a song.

A plan for the weeks after

You'll leave with a simple structure for your practice, so what you learn with Justin is still in your playing a month later, not just in your memory.

How the day runs

  1. 16:00 to 17:30

    I open the day

Before Justin takes over, I'll get your hands and feet warmed up on the pads and show you how to practise so that what you work on actually comes out when you play. You'll leave my session with a simple way to capture everything Justin teaches, so none of it gets lost once you're home.

  2. 17:30 to 18:30

    Dinner together

We eat together at the drum school, and dinner is included in your ticket. It's a relaxed hour to rest your hands, get to know the other drummers and talk with Justin before his session starts.

  3. 18:30 to 20:30

    Justin Scott

This is what you're coming for. Justin takes you through the Core Rudiment System the way he practises it himself, from the core rudiments to the permutations and modifications that give his playing its flow. You'll play every part of it on your pad and kick pad while he walks around the room and works with you directly.

  4. 20:30 to 21:00

    Questions and photos

The last half hour is yours to ask Justin anything you want to know about his playing and his practice, and to take a photo with him before you head home.

Justin Scott

Who is Justin Scott?

Justin Scott is a drummer and educator from Atlanta, Georgia, where he lives with his wife Katie and their daughters Avery and Adelyn. His obsession with drums started when he was two years old. He grew up playing in churches and bands and taught himself until he went to the Atlanta Institute of Music, where he graduated from the drum program in 2012.

Most drummers know him from social media, where one thing makes his playing stand out: flow. He can play an enormous amount of notes and still make it sound relaxed, musical and completely his own. None of that happened by accident. Justin built his career on constant practice and exploration of the instrument, and his teaching is all about helping drummers find their own voice on the kit.

The Core Rudiment System

Justin's new 192-page book is built around the 17 rudiments he considers the most important for drum set players, with every permutation and multiple modifications of each, adding up to over 1,150 variations. It's the material he practises himself, and in Den Haag he teaches it to you in person.

Why there are only 12 seats

The whole point of this day is that Justin can actually see and hear you. With 12 people he can walk around, watch your hands and give each of you feedback. With fifty people that becomes impossible, and you're back to watching from the back of the room.

So there are 12 pads in the room, and when they're taken, that's it.

Is this day for you?

This is for you if

you already play regularly, you're comfortable with 16th notes and the common rudiments, and you've watched Justin's videos wondering how he gets that kind of flow. You want to understand how he practises, not just admire the result.

It's probably not for you if

you're just starting out on drums, or you'd rather sit back and enjoy a show. There's a lot of playing involved, and you'll be doing most of it.
